It has been almost 20 years since I resigned my position with USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). I often get asked why I left a stable career with 14 years of service for an uncertain topsy-turvy life of a small business owner. It would be easy to give some simple answer, but honestly there were a lot of reasons I left. However, the overriding reason I left government employment is that I had a dream…
I know it sounds corny but honestly I did have a dream when I founded Agren. Although I didn’t have a specific direction for Agren, I knew I wanted to use Agren to do things faster and with fewer encumbrances. I wanted to work in a more creative, less stifling environment. I wanted to innovate. I wanted to be an entrepreneur. But what I wanted to do most was to elevate soil and water conservation issues to a new level. I wanted to unleash the power of the private sector and make a difference. I wanted to use the combination of my passion and talents to make a larger impact on the world.
After 20 years, I can say I may not have accomplished my dream yet…. However at Agren, we have built a platform that will change how soil and water conservation practices are designed and implemented. Even more important, we have more and better things to come.
The Agren team has accomplished a lot of good work. And honestly, I am proud of our staff for making it all possible. Even through some failures, we have always learned and moved forward.
I am most proud of the work we have achieved with our conservation software. Starting with our initial software program, PondBuilder, and extending on through our imminent release of SoilCalculator, I know our software will change how soil and water conservation work is implemented and measured. But more importantly, I know our software can minimize barriers and open the door for more meaningful private sector involvement in soil conservation. The kind of involvement that involves farmers and ranchers, along with their most trusted on-farm advisors, the ag retailers.
In a couple of weeks, we will be rolling out our latest version of SoilCalculator. Beyond a doubt, SoilCalculator is the best conservation software ever developed for agriculture. It has the potential to change soil erosion from an environmental issue to an economic issue. It has the ability to allow famers and their ag advisors, to incorporate conservation decisions into their precision ag platforms. It has the ability to change the narrative on soil erosion.
In the next couple of posts, I will be unveiling exciting benefits of our new SoilCalculator. I hope you will join me for the unveiling of what I believe is truly the best conservation software program ever developed for agriculture.
As they say…stay tuned.
